Chapter 11

Maggie couldn’t quite breathe on the drive to Porter’s house. But it wasn’t anxiety snapping in her blood―it was anticipation. Her body fairly sang with it, wanting to touch and be touched and get lost in the kind of heat she’d stopped imagining years ago.

She kept waiting for her phone to blow up in response to the quickly fired off text to Athena.

Home tomorrow. *rose emoji*

Porter glanced at her from the driver’s seat “You okay? We can turn around if you’ve changed your mind.”

“If you turn around, I might have to kill you.” She didn’t want to turn around. She didn’t want to slow down. She didn’t want the chance to get lost in her head and think about all the what ifs and whys and hows. She just wanted to be with him.

His low laugh seemed to stroke over her skin like a touch. “Understood. And can I just say, ‘Thank God.’ But I meant what I said before. You’re in control here. If you need me to back off, I will.”

Sweet, frustratingly patient man.

“Porter, I love this honorable streak of yours, but what I need is to be naked and sweaty in the next fifteen minutes. Bonus points if it’s against the inside of your front door.” God, just the idea of that had heat pooling low in her belly.

“Fuck me,” he groaned.

“That is the general idea.”

The truck leapt forward as he hit the gas.

She wanted to trail her hand up his thigh and find out if he was as aroused as she was. But there were too many switchbacks between here and his house, and she didn’t dare risk distracting him any more from driving.

“At the risk of blowing the mood, why tonight?”

Why indeed? “Because you reminded me that I won’t break. That I can face down all my demons and their bullshit and come out whole on the other side. Because I did exactly that with Willard Samson, and it felt freaking amazing. It’s the first time since I came home that I’ve really felt like me…grown-up, in-control, adult me. And I was able to do that because of you. Because you believe in me.” It was an incredible high, one that overrode her natural caution and gave her the courage to ask for what she wanted. “It seemed like something worth celebrating.”

“For the record, I don’t think I’ve ever been prouder of you than I was watching you put Willard in his place.”

“It was one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done.” She shot him a saucy grin. “Although I’m hoping to outdo that a few times over before tomorrow.”

“God, I love a challenge.”

A tiny voice in the back of her mind tried to whisper doubt. She was talking big talk, but she hadn’t actually managed to get this far since high school.

Squeezing her eyes shut, she struck back at the anxiety. Shut up.

She wouldn’t think about the past now. Not with Porter. She wanted him more than she’d thought possible. He’d proved to her over and over that she wasn’t broken.
